Cathy Ferguson, the wife of Manchester United‘s legendary coach Sir Alex Ferguson, has passed away at the age of 84. The couple tied the knot in 1966, enjoying 57 years of marriage and raising three sons, including renowned soccer player Peterborough Darren Ferguson.
Cathy was a pillar of support for her husband throughout his illustrious career, and both the men’s and women’s teams of Manchester United will wear black armbands in their upcoming matches as a mark of respect. A statement released by the club read, “Everyone at Manchester United extends their deepest condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on the passing of Lady Cathy, his wife, companion, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who was a strong pillar for Sir Alex throughout his life.”
Cathy and Sir Alex, who is 81 years old, met in 1964 while they were both working in the catering industry. Sir Alex went on to become the longest-serving manager of Manchester United, spending 27 years at the helm and considering Cathy as a vital support system during his tenure. He once said, “Cathy has been the key to everything.”
