Adam Rubenstein Cbs News Deputy Editor

NEW YORK, NY — CBS News has appointed Adam Rubenstein as its new deputy editor, sources confirmed on Monday. Rubenstein, a conservative journalist known for his viral essay on challenges faced by conservative voices in media, is also a trusted member of Bari Weiss‘s team at The Free Press.

Weiss, who founded The Free Press in 2022, was recently named CBS News editor in chief. As part of the integration, Rubenstein will continue to serve as deputy editor at The Free Press, which CBS’s parent company, Paramount Skydance, acquired for $150 million.

“Adam is part of Bari’s inner circle. She trusts him implicitly,” a source close to the situation said. Rubenstein is expected to effectively manage The Free Press while Weiss directs editorial strategies for major CBS shows including “60 Minutes,” “Face The Nation,” and “CBS Sunday Morning.”

The Free Press has gained attention for its criticism of liberal bias in news media, its stance against what it refers to as ‘wokism,’ and its strong support for Israel amid tensions with Hamas.

Rubenstein and Weiss have a history together, having met at the New York Times where he was the editor for a controversial op-ed by Tom Cotton. Their shared experience at the Times, where conservative voices often felt underrepresented, has strengthened their professional bond.

In a 2024 announcement of Rubenstein’s contributor role at The Free Press, Weiss remarked, “Since the earliest days of The Free Press, Adam has been my 3 a.m. call.”

Rubenstein previously faced backlash at the Times for his conservative views, which he detailed in essays describing his experiences as a self-identified ‘heretic’ within a predominantly liberal newsroom.

Reps for both CBS News and The Free Press did not respond to requests for comment regarding Rubenstein’s new role.
