CenterPoint Prepares for Wildfire Risks in Greater Houston Area

HOUSTON, Texas, March 14, 2025 — CenterPoint Energy is taking precautionary measures as it monitors weather forecasts predicting increased wildfire risk across the Greater Houston area this weekend, particularly in Cypress, Fort Bend, and Katy. The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for March 15 from noon to 9 p.m., highlighting potential conditions conducive to wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service, significant wind gusts ranging from 20 to 30 miles per hour combined with low humidity can create a dangerous environment for fire outbreaks. “While the fire risk is currently lower for our service area than in other parts of the state, we are staying focused and taking action to prepare our equipment and customers should conditions worsen,” said Don Daigler, senior vice president of Emergency Planning & Response at CenterPoint.
In preparation for possible temporary power outages due to wildfire conditions, CenterPoint has mobilized approximately 1,000 workers, including line and vegetation crews, to respond quickly to any emergencies. The company is also inspecting power lines, adjusting safety settings, and communicating proactively with approximately 330,000 customers in affected regions.
“Our highest priority is the safety of our customers and communities,” Daigler emphasized. “In the event of any temporary safety outages, we will restore power safely and as quickly as possible.”
Residents are also advised to stay safe by avoiding outdoor burning, refraining from parking on dry grass, and reporting any fires to local emergency services. Weather conditions in Southeast Texas are anticipated to vary from elevated to critical fire risks influenced by westerly winds and low humidity levels.
The National Weather Service warned, “Any fires that start could rapidly accelerate in size and intensity.” Local weather changes following recent rainfall may temporarily delay low humidity but will not entirely mitigate fire risks. CenterPoint officials aim to ensure that customers remain informed through various channels, including social media, email, and the Power Alert Service.
In addition to signing up for the Power Alert Service for real-time outage updates, customers can track outages via CenterPoint’s improved cloud-based Outage Tracker, available in both English and Spanish. The public is encouraged to follow CenterPoint on social media for the latest information during these critical weather warnings.
