Houston Rodeo Brahman Heifer Donation

HOUSTON — A high school senior from Central Texas experienced a life-changing surprise on March 12 when he was gifted a prized Brahman heifer at the Houston Rodeo, fulfilling a long-held dream after overcoming cancer.

Brady Barton, 17, attended the event with his family, initially expecting to serve as a guest. Instead, he was invited to help judge a class of Brahman heifers, where he received the unexpected announcement that he would be the recipient of a heifer.

“Congratulations, it’s yours,” the judge announced, referring to one of the Brahman heifers, marking a significant moment for Brady, who has loved this breed of cattle since he was a child.

“I just always, since I was itty bitty, wanted to be around cows,” Brady expressed. “I just always wanted a Brahman heifer. A real fancy one.” His joy was evident as he momentarily lost his words. “Just blessed, I blacked out for a little bit, but I’m back to normal now,” he added.

This occasion bears special meaning for Brady, who has faced considerable health hurdles. At 15, what started as an emergency appendectomy revealed a startling diagnosis: lymphoma.

“He said it’s a fast-growing cancer,” remembered Rebecca Barton, Brady’s mother, illustrating the emotional turmoil the family endured. For Brady, who has long cherished raising cattle, the diagnosis was devastating. “Just a mix of emotions, you know at 15 years old you don’t expect that to happen to you,” he reflected.

Now, cancer-free at 17, Brady welcomes a new addition to his herd, thanks to efforts from Make-A-Wish Gulf Coast and Louisiana, along with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Shelly Millwee, CEO of Make-A-Wish Gulf Coast and Louisiana, highlighted the unique nature of Brady’s wish. “We get wishes for kids every single day, but it really surprised me when I saw that Brady had wished for a cow. You know, there was really only one call I could make, and that was to the rodeo,” she stated.

Julie Bass, Chief Mission Officer for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, emphasized the synergy of this collaboration. “It was just a perfect pairing when he asked for something that we already are promoting,” she noted.

For Brady, receiving the heifer is about more than just a prize. “It’s almost overwhelming. But I’m really thankful, and just blessed is really all that I have to say. I’m just blessed,” he said, conveying his gratitude.

Held at the NRG Center, the Houston Rodeo is known for its family-friendly atmosphere, delicious food, and entertainment, making it an ideal setting for Brady’s inspiring story of resilience and the joy of returning to his passion after conquering cancer.
