WASHINGTON, April 15 (Reuters) – 4chan, the infamous internet message board, has reportedly been hacked, with claims that the hacker exposed personal details of its moderators. This incident gained attention after a previously inactive section of the site displayed the message “U GOT HACKED” across its page, raising questions about the site’s security.

Alon Gal, co-founder of Israeli cybercrime monitoring firm Hudson Rock, indicated that the claims appear credible, referencing screenshots that purport to show 4chan’s backend systems. According to reports, the site was only intermittently accessible on Tuesday, April 15, leading to speculation surrounding its operational security.

Messages sent to 4chan’s press email were not returned, adding to the uncertainty regarding the authenticity of the alleged breach. One purported moderator reportedly acknowledged the situation, directing inquiries to a video statement, which contained unrelated and explicit content.

TechCrunch confirmed that they had no reason to dispute the authenticity of the screenshots circulating online, further fueling concerns regarding the site’s vulnerability. An increase in outages reported via DownDetector coincided with the incident, indicating a surge in website access issues. These complaints included problems with server connections and general accessibility.

In the past, 4chan has faced scrutiny regarding its user policies, its role in facilitating hate speech, and allegations of online harassment incidents originating from its boards.
