Channing Tatum Stars in Wild True Story Film ‘Roofman’

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) — Channing Tatum stars in the upcoming movie “Roofman,” which tells the astonishing true story of Jeffrey Manchester, a man who lived inside a Toys “R” Us while pulling off thefts. Directed by Derek Cianfrance, the film opens nationwide on Friday, October 10, with previews starting Thursday night at 7 p.m.
Tatum portrays a military man struggling after returning from Afghanistan, as evidenced by his daughter’s disappointment when he fails to buy her a bike for her birthday. Seeking a solution, he concocts a plan to rob 45 McDonald’s restaurants in the Charlotte area, knowing they have significant cash after weekends. His plan eventually leads to his arrest and a 45-year prison sentence, primarily due to non-violent kidnapping charges related to the workers.
Once imprisoned, Manchester orchestrates a daring escape and hides out in a Toys “R” Us for several months. During this time, he develops a relationship with Leigh, played by Kirsten Dunst, using toys as a means of connection. Tatum’s character manipulates the store’s cameras to come and go, learning to survive within the store’s walls.
Cianfrance, best known for dramatic films like “Blue Valentine,” infuses “Roofman” with humor and romance, appealing to mainstream audiences. The film also features notable actors such as Peter Dinklage as Mitch, the Toys “R” Us manager, and LaKeith Stanfield as Jeff’s best friend Steve.
The story presents Manchester as an unlikely hero, managing to express good intentions despite his criminal methods. Tatum’s performance has already garnered praise from early screenings, with critics noting the film’s engaging blend of comedy, romance, and a touch of tension.
“Roofman” explores themes of redemption and the complexity of relationships built on deception. It offers not just a glimpse into Manchester’s story but a commentary on life’s unexpected turns.
With its humorous and heartfelt approach, “Roofman” is set to be a crowd-pleaser for viewers looking for a captivating film this weekend.
