Chargers Edge Broncos 23-20 in Thrilling AFC West Showdown

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — The Los Angeles Chargers clinched a thrilling 23-20 victory over the Denver Broncos Sunday, thanks to Justin Herbert‘s impressive comeback in the final moments of the game. With just 2:44 left, Herbert connected with Keenan Allen for a 20-yard touchdown, tying the game at 20.
Following the touchdown, the Broncos went three-and-out, giving Herbert and the Chargers an opportunity to drive for the winning field goal. Starting from their own 32-yard line, Herbert completed all four passes on the final drive, culminating in a 43-yard field goal by Cameron Dicker as time expired.
Herbert finished the game 28 of 47 for 300 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. At 27 years and 195 days old, he also became the youngest player in NFL history to record 2,000 career completions, surpassing Drew Bledsoe.
The Chargers maintained their perfect season record, improving to 3-0, their best start since 2002. Coach Jim Harbaugh’s squad previously defeated two division rivals, Kansas City and Las Vegas, before facing the Broncos.
Despite falling behind 10-3 in the second quarter after a touchdown from rookie Omarion Hampton, the Broncos surged ahead with a flurry of scoring. Quarterback Bo Nix threw a 52-yard touchdown to Courtland Sutton just before halftime, changing the momentum after Denver had struggled early in the game.
At 17-10, the Broncos extended their lead after a 19-yard touchdown run by J.K. Dobbins, who had flashed his explosive ability in the second half.
However, the Chargers fought back. With 4:29 left in the game, Herbert’s well-timed pass to Allen leveled the score, and Dicker’s kick sealed the win.
Injury concerns for the Chargers followed Najee Harris‘ left ankle injury, which occurred in the second quarter. The team later reported he would not return to the game.
The Broncos will host Cincinnati next week, hoping to bounce back after their narrow loss. The Chargers will be on the road next Sunday, looking to build on their winning streak.
