Chattanooga Schools Closures Winter Weather

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Chattanooga area, prompting several schools and organizations to announce closures and delays for Thursday. The region is expected to experience inclement weather, potentially leading to slick road conditions.

Officials are warning that although significant snow accumulation is not anticipated, any precipitation may create hazardous driving conditions. School systems, alongside various local organizations, have taken preemptive measures to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Tennessee‘s Department of Transportation (TDOT) has also announced ongoing construction activities on I-75 that will be affected by the weather. Starting Monday, February 17, crews will install concrete beams for a new bridge over I-75 at Hamilton Place Boulevard, leading to nightly traffic interruptions from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. ET until February 25, 2025.

Drivers should expect rolling roadblocks and lane closures in both directions on I-75, as well as temporary closures of the loop ramp to I-75 South from Hamilton Place Boulevard. “Motorists are advised to exercise caution and stay alert for construction signage and personnel in the area,” a TDOT spokesperson stated.

In Polk County, cleanup operations are underway following a road collapse on Highway 30 near Kimsey Mountain Highway and Sage Hill Road. The road remains closed until further notice, and travelers are urged to use US 411 to avoid traffic disruptions.

At a press conference, Sheriff Steve Ross confirmed that no injuries occurred during the Highway 30 incident. The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the collapse, which took place while a vehicle was on the road. The sheriff said, “The driver of the pickup truck was unharmed, but we need to assess the full extent of the road’s damage.”

With winter weather impacting the area, authorities remind all drivers to utilize motorist information tools and to check travel conditions prior to departure. TDOT encourages drivers to report any incidents and to refrain from distracted driving practices, such as texting or using a phone while behind the wheel.

For ongoing updates on road conditions and construction activities, officials recommend travelers call 511 for statewide information.
