CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer was seriously wounded in a shooting Thursday evening in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side.

The officer, assigned to the Gresham District tactical team, was shot near East 82nd Street and South Drexel Avenue, according to law enforcement sources. The circumstances surrounding the incident are unclear, and the officer’s condition has not been disclosed.

Sources say that while rushing the officer for medical treatment, other officers were involved in a crash, and their car caught fire. The injured officer was then transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center in another police vehicle.
