Chicago Sky Fire Head Coach Teresa Weatherspoon After One Season
The Chicago Sky have announced the dismissal of head coach Teresa Weatherspoon after just one season, citing a decision made in “the best interest of the organization” according to a statement released by Sky co-owner Nadia Rawlinson on Friday. The Sky finished their season with a 13-27 record, marking their first playoff absence since 2018.
Weatherspoon’s tenure with the Sky began on a challenging note, following her hiring less than a year ago. Previously, she served as an assistant coach with the New Orleans Pelicans and boasted a decorated career as a player, being inducted into the Hall of Fame and earning the title of WNBA Defensive Player of the Year twice.
The decision to part ways with Weatherspoon has been met with mixed feelings, especially among the team’s players. Notably, rookie forward Angel Reese expressed her dismay on social media, stating, “I’m heartbroken… She was the only person that believed in me. The one that trusted me.” Reese’s sentiments highlighted the personal and professional impact Weatherspoon had during her brief time as head coach.
The Sky’s season was marred by several challenges. Beyond their underwhelming record, they struggled offensively, ranking second-worst in the league with a 97.0 offensive rating and attempting the fewest three-point shots per game. Furthermore, the team had to navigate roster disruptions, including the trading of All-Star guard Dana Evans and losing Reese to a wrist injury early in September.
Nadi Rawlinson extended gratitude towards Weatherspoon, acknowledging her “energy and passion” in the role, while also pointing out the resilience she inspired in the players. Despite Weatherspoon’s efforts, the Sky’s management has decided to begin the search for a new head coach, marking the third head coaching change in as many years.
The Sky are headed into what promises to be a busy offseason. With only two players on guaranteed contracts for the 2025 season, significant roster changes are expected. Additionally, the team will be making a lottery pick in the upcoming draft, although they will be unable to secure the No. 1 overall pick due to a pick-swap agreement with the Atlanta Dream.
