DURHAM, England — Rebecca Holloway, a 31-year-old convicted child rapist serving a 12-and-a-half-year sentence, was found dead at HM Prison Low Newton, authorities confirmed.

Holloway’s death, which occurred on February 13, was announced by the U.K. Prison Service on March 9. An investigation into the circumstances of her death is currently in progress, with police indicating that foul play is not suspected.

The Prison Service released a statement saying, “HMP/YOI Low Newton prisoner Rebecca Holloway died on Feb 13. As with all deaths in custody, the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.” A police spokesperson mentioned, “Police were alerted to the discovery of a 31-year-old woman found hanged at HMP Low Newton. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.”

Holloway was sentenced in December 2020 for multiple offenses, including child rape, conspiracy to sexually assault children under the age of 13, and distribution of indecent images of children. Her accomplice, Oliver Wilson, received a 30-year sentence after the couple was apprehended following Wilson’s attempts to purchase children’s underwear online.

During their trial, prosecutors outlined the couple’s extensive offenses, which began to unfold in 2017 when investigators learned of Wilson’s online activities. Upon raiding his home, law enforcement discovered not only illicit messages between Wilson and Holloway but also disturbing physical evidence, including children’s clothing and harmful digital content.

At the time of her sentencing, Judge Paul Watson QC described Holloway’s actions as “willing, even enthusiastic participation” in the abuse of minors, highlighting the lasting psychological damage inflicted on victims. He stated, “The full extent of the long-term impact of what you two did to the girl may never be known, but it is clear it has had a profound effect upon her.”

Holloway’s defense during the trial focused on her claiming past abuse and mental health struggles, including post-traumatic stress disorder, as factors contributing to her actions. Her attorney argued that while she participated in the abuse, she had been manipulated by Wilson. However, the evidence presented contradicted this narrative, reflecting her active involvement.

Following her conviction, Holloway’s wellbeing while incarcerated came under scrutiny. Reports from the prison indicated that her behavior had deteriorated significantly, and fellow inmates had expressed concerns regarding her mental health. As inquiries into Holloway’s death continue, her next of kin have been informed, and updates will be provided as investigations proceed.
