Christine Fréchette, the current Minister of Immigration in Quebec, is set to be appointed as the superminister of Economy and Energy, replacing Pierre Fitzgibbon. The announcement is expected to take place on the afternoon of Thursday, September 5, 2024.

Fréchette did not deny the rumors surrounding her potential appointment during an impromptu press conference in Rimouski, where the Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ) caucus is currently being held. She expressed her willingness to accept the role, stating, “If this is the wish of the Premier, I would be honored. My goal is to work towards the development of Quebec, regardless of the position I hold.”

She further emphasized that the decision rests with the Premier, inviting the public to follow the developments throughout the day.

Before her political career began in 2022, Fréchette served as the President and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce for East Montreal from 2016 to 2021 and as the Director of External Relations and Institutional Affairs at Montréal International from 2014 to 2016.

The information suggests that Jean-François Roberge, the Minister of French Language and Canadian Relations, is also expected to take over the responsibilities of Immigration, according to reports that have not been denied.

Upon his arrival at the caucus, Roberge commented on the significance of issues related to the French language, stating that they should be present in many ministries.

The adjustment in the cabinet’s composition is scheduled for 3:20 PM in Quebec, as per the official agenda of the Premier.

Pierre Fitzgibbon announced his departure from politics on Wednesday, which significantly disrupted the CAQ’s plans just days before the parliamentary return.
