Cincinnati Zoo Welcomes Otter Pups Ahead of Mother’s Day

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Zoo announced Friday that Munti, an Asian small-clawed otter, has given birth to a litter of pups a month earlier than originally expected. According to the zoo’s spokesperson Angela Hatke, this marks Munti’s first litter.
Victoria McGee, the Zoological Manager of Primates, expressed cautious optimism about the health of the pups, noting, “Munti is a first-time mom, and with that comes some risk. We are currently in a critical three-day window for the pups. But hearing hearty squeaks that sound healthy is a great sign!”
In the lead-up to giving birth, Munti displayed increased nesting behaviors, prompting the care team to prioritize her comfort in her chosen nesting area. Following the birth, Munti, along with the father otter Flounder, and their new pups are now hidden in their nest from public view.
The zoo team stated that the otter family will remain off habitat for about eight weeks. During this time, they will bond and nurture the pups in a behind-the-scenes environment to ensure their health and safety.
Zoo officials will closely monitor the family while maintaining a hopeful outlook regarding their well-being. Meanwhile, the care team is excited about the new arrivals and their successful birth.
