Deshaun Watson Cleveland Browns Quarterback

Cleveland, OH – The Cleveland Browns enter Week 5 of the NFL season with a 1-3 record, facing a critical decision at the quarterback position ahead of their game against the Minnesota Vikings in London.

Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco has struggled significantly this season, throwing six interceptions, which ranks him second in the league behind the Raiders’ Geno Smith. This poor performance has led to calls from fans and analysts alike for rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders to get playing time.

On the other hand, Deshaun Watson, a former Pro Bowler, is still recovering from multiple surgeries for a torn Achilles he suffered in Week 7 of the 2024 season. Watson has not returned to practice, but head coach Kevin Stefanski has given some hope regarding his rehab progress. “Deshaun’s doing a great job with his rehab, and that’s really where his focus is,” Stefanski stated.

While Watson is currently on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, there is speculation he could return earlier than expected. The team has not released a definite timeline for his return, but it is thought he may be ready by mid-October.

General Manager Andrew Berry acknowledged the challenges with Watson’s tenure, stating, “The trade hasn’t gone as we had hoped. We’ve never gotten consistent performance at that position.” Watson’s NFL journey began with the Houston Texans after being drafted in 2017, where he led the team to two division titles and earned Pro Bowl honors three times before off-field issues led to his absence and eventual trade to the Browns.

As the Browns navigate their options, Watson’s situation remains uncertain. Despite the ongoing quarterback competition, Watson’s capabilities could change the course for the team, depending on his recovery process. Watson has remained involved with the team, providing support to other quarterbacks in the room.

“Everyone is doubting me. I believe in myself,” Watson said recently, hinting at his determination to return to form this season. The Browns continue to evaluate their quarterback options as they head into a crucial matchup this week.
