LONDON — As the Cleveland Browns prepared for their NFL International Series game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, they announced rookie Dillon Gabriel as their new starting quarterback. This decision comes after a disappointing 1-3 start to the season and ineffective offensive performances.

During a recent practice session, Gabriel was seen throwing passes in the end zone while veteran Joe Flacco observed. Coach Kevin Stefanski indicated that this change was necessary to rejuvenate the struggling offense, which has relied heavily on a strong defense.

Stefanski admitted that while Flacco has experience, the team needed to try something different. “Gabriel is the starter, and Flacco is the backup,” he confirmed. Shedeur Sanders remains the third-string quarterback and inactive for game day unless both starters are injured.

In a previous interview with ESPN Cleveland, Sanders expressed confidence in his ability, saying, “I know I’m capable of doing better than that.” The Browns, however, have opted not to elevate him at this time.

The decision to start Gabriel comes in a critical week for the Browns, who need to improve their scoring to support a defense that has played exceptionally well. With inconsistent quarterback play, the coaching staff is under pressure to make changes.

General manager Andrew Berry previously hinted at Sanders’ long-term development, likening his transition to the team’s system as learning a new language. Despite some talent, concerns about Sanders’ readiness for the NFL may have played a role in this decision.

Stefanski has maintained a focus on Gabriel’s campaign, emphasizing his quick adaptation despite a rocky start in training camp. He described Gabriel as a quick thinker and someone who is well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

As the Browns gear up for their matchup against the Vikings, the team is hoping that this change in leadership will turn their season around and bring them closer to playoff contention.
