The Cleveland Cavaliers have solidified their key player, Donovan Mitchell, by agreeing to a significant three-year, $150.3 million maximum contract extension with a player option for the 2027-28 season, sources close to the situation revealed.

This deal not only ensures the Cavaliers’ stability by locking in their franchise cornerstone beyond the upcoming season but also offers Mitchell a guaranteed total of $185 million over four years, with the opportunity to aim for a five-year extension exceeding $380 million in 2027 should he meet the league’s 10-year service criteria.

Mitchell and his agent, Austin Brown of CAA Basketball, met with Cavaliers’ president of basketball operations, Koby Altman, in Los Angeles, where they reached a mutual agreement on the extension, signaling Mitchell’s commitment to the organization’s vision and potential for championship contention.

Since acquiring Mitchell from the Utah Jazz at the trade deadline two seasons ago, the Cavaliers have experienced back-to-back playoff appearances, including a remarkable run to the Eastern Conference semifinals in the previous season.

During an opening-round playoff series against the Boston Celtics, Mitchell displayed an outstanding performance with 89 points in Games 6 and 7, marking the second-highest total in NBA postseason history for Games 6 and 7, as per ESPN Stats & Information research.

At 27 years old, Mitchell has earned five consecutive All-Star selections and achieved an impressive scoring average of 26.6 points in the 2023-24 season, a feat previously accomplished in franchise history only by LeBron James.

Mitchell’s on-court prowess is further highlighted by his status as the first guard since Allen Iverson to maintain a minimum of 20 points per game in each of his first seven NBA seasons. Additionally, he showcased career-best numbers in assists (6.1) and steals (1.8) last season, ranking high in steals per game and deflections on a league-wide scale.
