I-90 Closed Near Mercer Island Due to Possible Explosive Device
A significant portion of Interstate 90 (I-90) near Mercer Island, Washington, has been closed due to a potential bomb threat. The incident occurred on October 12, 2024, when Bellevue police attempted to intercept a vehicle that had entered the highway traveling westbound.
According to reports from the Washington State Patrol, the driver of the vehicle threw what appeared to be an explosive device onto the highway. This led to the immediate closure of both westbound and eastbound lanes of I-90. The westbound lanes are closed at Bellevue Way, while the eastbound lanes are blocked at 76th on Mercer Island.
Bellevue police have apprehended two individuals in connection with the incident. A bomb squad has been dispatched to the scene to investigate and neutralize the potential threat. Despite the serious nature of the incident, authorities have stated that there is no current threat to the public.
Traffic is being diverted, and significant transport disruptions are expected in the area, including from Lake Sammamish to Seattle. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes, such as using I-405 and I-5 to circumvent the closure. Additionally, SR 520 is closed this weekend, further complicating travel plans.
