I 40 Closure West Of Albuquerque January 2025

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Interstate 40 is closed in both directions west of Albuquerque after multiple crashes and severe weather conditions caused hazardous driving conditions Thursday morning. The closure is at mile marker 122, approximately 27 miles west of Albuquerque near the Laguna Pueblo exit, according to the New Mexico State Police.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) reported icy conditions from mile markers 117 to 131, stretching from the Mesita Interchange to Tohajiilee. Black ice is also possible on I-40 from Tohajiilee to the Big-I interchange in Albuquerque. Drivers are urged to seek alternate routes and exercise caution.

State police are assisting Laguna Police with the crashes, though no injuries have been reported at this time. The agency has not provided an estimated timeframe for reopening the interstate but warns of significant delays. Semi-trucks and other vehicles are backed up for miles, creating a traffic standstill.

NMDOT officials emphasized the dangers of driving in icy conditions, particularly with black ice, which is difficult to see and can cause sudden loss of vehicle control. The agency is working to clear the roadway and treat icy patches, but the process is expected to take several hours.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
