CNN’s Acosta Offered Late-Night Shift Amid Network Overhaul
NEW YORK, N.Y. — CNN anchor Jim Acosta has been offered a new role hosting a late-night show airing from midnight to 2 a.m. ET, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The move comes as part of a broader restructuring at the network, which has left staffers anxious about potential layoffs and schedule changes.
The proposed shift, which would target West Coast and international audiences, marks a significant departure from Acosta’s current mid-morning slot. The veteran journalist, known for his contentious exchanges with former President Donald Trump, has anchored CNN’s 10 a.m. hour for the past 11 months after previously working weekend shifts.
CNN executives have pitched the late-night assignment as an opportunity to deliver live breaking news to audiences in different time zones. However, some staffers view the move as a demotion, given that CNN typically airs primetime show reruns during those hours. Acosta is reportedly considering the offer, which could involve relocating to Los Angeles to fulfill his new duties.
The timing of the proposal has sparked internal backlash, particularly given Acosta’s history with the Trump administration. In 2019, Acosta was temporarily barred from the White House press room after clashing with Trump during press conferences. CNN successfully fought to reinstate him, cementing Acosta’s status as a symbol of press freedom.
The network has recently made efforts to appeal to conservative viewers, featuring figures like former Fox News personalities Gretchen Carlson and Geraldo Rivera, as well as former George W. Bush adviser Scott Jennings. These moves have raised questions about whether Acosta’s potential reassignment is part of a broader strategy to shift the network’s tone.
CNN has declined to comment on the matter, but the network’s leadership has signaled further changes ahead. CEO Mark Thompson recently announced a $70 million investment in digital content, with plans to explore new properties focused on health, wellness, and other consumer interests. “We will develop new digital products with a special focus on digital experiences worth paying for,” Thompson told staffers.
Acosta’s potential move comes amid a series of high-profile departures at CNN, including Don Lemon, John Harwood, and Brian Stelter, who exited during the tenure of former CEO Chris Licht. The network’s ongoing restructuring has left employees uncertain about their futures, with layoffs and production shifts to Atlanta rumored to be on the horizon.
As CNN navigates these changes, Acosta’s next steps remain a focal point of speculation. Whether he accepts the late-night role or explores other opportunities, his career trajectory will continue to reflect the evolving landscape of cable news.
