Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for Philadelphia Area This Week

PHILADELPHIA, PA – On Monday at 5:36 p.m., the National Weather Service issued a coastal flood advisory effective Wednesday from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. The advisory impacts Lower Bucks, Delaware, and Philadelphia counties.
According to the weather service, low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways may see up to one foot of inundation above ground level. Minor coastal flooding is anticipated due to high tides on Wednesday and Thursday nights.
The weather service reminds residents that flooding can begin on the most vulnerable roads along tidal waterways, which may lead to partial or full road closures. Travelers are advised to allow extra time as some roads could be closed, and to avoid driving around barricades or through unknown depths of water.
A flash flood warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or currently occurring. Residents living in flood-prone areas should move immediately to higher ground. Flash floods can develop quickly, sometimes in areas not experiencing rain.
Local authorities also urge caution regarding general flood warnings and advisories. A flood warning indicates flooding is occurring or imminent, while an advisory informs residents that flooding could cause significant inconvenience but is not severe enough to warrant a warning.
The weather service has provided safety tips for those in flood-prone regions. Residents should seek higher ground and follow any evacuation orders from authorities. If time permits, disconnect utilities to minimize electrical hazards during flooding.
Additionally, staying clear of basements or submerged areas can prevent electrical accidents. Further, if trapped in moving water, it’s vital to seek the highest point and call emergency services.
Heavy rainfall increases the risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Drivers should never traverse floodwaters, which can easily sweep away vehicles. Just 12 inches of swiftly moving water can lead to a car being carried away.
Stay informed and prepared to ensure safety during these weather events.
