Cobb County Prepares for Winter Storm with Road Maintenance and Emergency Shelters
COBB COUNTY, Ga. — As a winter storm approaches north Georgia, Cobb County officials are mobilizing resources to ensure the safety of residents. The Cobb County Department of Transportation has readied its road maintenance crews to treat and clear more than 430 miles of roadway, following a recent Inclement Weather Exercise to prepare for such events.
The county is collaborating with MUST Ministries to provide emergency shelters during the cold weather. Additionally, Cobb County Emergency Management is working closely with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) to monitor conditions and coordinate responses.
“We are fully prepared to handle the challenges this storm may bring,” said a spokesperson for the Cobb County Department of Transportation. “Our crews are equipped with the necessary materials and have undergone rigorous training to ensure roads remain safe and passable.”
Local hospitals and emergency medical services are also on high alert. American Medical Response (AMR) has been preparing for the storm for over a week, ensuring that their vehicles are equipped with winter-friendly tires and salt supplies. EMT Jonathon Jenkins recalled the difficulties faced during the 2014 winter storm, emphasizing the importance of preparedness. “We had to navigate side roads and back roads, and at times, we couldn’t even get up hills because the roads were so bad,” Jenkins said.
Emory Healthcare has stockpiled 96 hours of supplies, including food and energy reserves, to ensure uninterrupted operations. “Hospitals cannot and will not close,” said Matt Wain of Emory Healthcare. “We are here to provide care, no matter the conditions.”
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels, including the Cobb County Emergency Management Agency and local power companies, for updates on road conditions and potential outages.
