Coco Gauff Triumphs in Beijing, Climbs to Fourth in WTA Ranking
Coco Gauff, the American tennis player, has seen a significant rise in her career following her victory at the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing. This triumph marks her second title of the season and moves her up to fourth place in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. This new position comes after she defeated Czech player Karolina Muchova in the finals, marking her eighth career title. This win follows her earlier success at Auckland in January, ending an eight-month title drought for the 20-year-old tennis star.
In the latest WTA rankings released on Monday, Gauff reenters the top five, a position she had left in early September. This was a significant period marking the celebration of her victory at the US Open a year earlier, her sole Grand Slam title to date. As the new WTA 1000 event kicks off in Wuhan, Gauff is now putting pressure on her compatriot Jessica Pegula, who currently holds third place with a lead of less than 400 points.
Conversely, Belarusian player Aryna Sabalenka missed an opportunity to advance in the rankings at the Beijing tournament. The absence of defending champion Iga Swiatek from the tournament provided a potential opening for Sabalenka to move up the rankings. However, her streak of 15 consecutive victories came to an end in the quarter-finals, where she was defeated by eventual finalist Muchova.
Despite this setback, Sabalenka only partially closes the gap on Polish player Iga Swiatek, who is set to celebrate a year as the world number one. Even a final victory in Wuhan will not allow Sabalenka to surpass Swiatek due to a point deficit of more than 1000.
Beyond the top ten, Spanish player Paula Badosa has made notable progress at the Beijing tournament, climbing four places to reach 15th in the rankings. This serves as some consolation for Badosa, who nearly reached the finals but was halted by Gauff in the semi-finals.
The current WTA rankings reflect these changes and show significant movements among the top players. The list is headed by Iga Swiatek with 9785 points, followed by Aryna Sabalenka with 8716 points. Third place is Jessica Pegula at 5945, followed by Coco Gauff who has 5593 points, marking an increase of two positions. Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan has moved to fifth place with 5481 points, reflecting a decline of one position.
