Cody Bellinger: The Diamondbacks’ Dark Horse Free Agent Target

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Arizona Diamondbacks may look outside their pitching staff for new talent, and former NL MVP Cody Bellinger could be a strong candidate. The veteran outfielder and first baseman, currently with the New York Yankees, is likely to enter free agency after the 2025 season.
Bellinger was traded from the Chicago Cubs to the Yankees after the 2024 season and has a player option remaining for 2026, which he is expected to decline after a standout year. If he tests the market, the 2023 MVP will draw significant interest due to his impressive performance in New York.
A recent article linked Arizona as a “dark horse” destination for Bellinger. Sportswriter Miller noted, “Calling Arizona a dark horse to sign one of the best outfielders on the market is maybe a bit much. They could use one and have shown a drastically increased willingness to spend money over the past two years.”
Bellinger had his best numbers since 2023 in 2025, slashing .272/.334/.480 with 29 home runs, an .813 OPS, and contributing five Wins Above Replacement. His defensive metrics are impressive too, with +11 Defensive Runs Saved and +7 Outs Above Average.
However, while the Diamondbacks could benefit from Bellinger, there are considerations to make. Arizona needs both an outfielder and a first baseman, and Bellinger has experience at first base, though his defensive stats are not as strong in that position. Additionally, with several left-handed hitters already in their outfield, Arizona could benefit more from a right-handed power bat.
The biggest hurdle remains Bellinger’s price tag, projected at over $180 million for a six-year contract, which seems unfeasible for a team aiming to reduce payroll in 2026. While General Manager Mike Hazen may have funds to spend, it’s likely that any big investments will prioritize pitching improvements.
Despite these challenges, Bellinger’s performance and versatility make him a noteworthy target for the Diamondbacks as they consider their strategy for the upcoming offseason.
