Cold Weather Shelters Open in Sarasota and Charlotte Counties Ahead of Temperature Drop

SARASOTA, Fla. — Cold weather shelters in Sarasota and Charlotte counties are being readied as temperatures are forecasted to drop significantly. Emergency Management officials are collaborating with local municipalities and community organizations to ensure safe havens for vulnerable individuals.
The shelters will open this evening, Thursday, Feb. 20, at the following locations: 100 Church at 14525 Tamiami Trail, North Port. This emergency shelter will operate from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m., providing both meals and a warm space for attendees who are advised to bring their own sleeping materials.
Additionally, the Charlotte CARE Center, located at 1476 Kenesaw St. in Port Charlotte, will also serve as a cold weather refuge. To utilize this service, individuals must pre-register by calling 941-627-4313 and arrive no later than 8 p.m.
Emergency Management officials are urging residents to keep pets indoors during this cold spell. Those who must be outside overnight or during the early morning hours should dress in multiple warm layers to minimize skin exposure to the biting wind.
“We encourage everyone to take these warnings seriously and utilize the shelters provided,” stated a spokesperson from the local Emergency Management office. “There’s no reason anyone should have to endure the cold outside.”
As temperatures are expected to plummet, these shelters are crucial for those in need, reflecting the community’s commitment to protecting its most vulnerable members.
