LONDON, England — Director Jon M. Chu revealed that adjustments to color were a significant factor delaying the release of ‘Wicked: For Good.’ The film, a follow-up to the musical adaptation of the beloved story, is set to premiere in theaters on November 21, 2025.

While discussing the challenges during a recent event at the BFI London Film Festival, Chu explained that he and his team worked meticulously on the film’s visual presentation. “The colors were holding us back,” Chu said. He emphasized that ensuring the iconic scenes—like the yellow brick road—maintained their vibrancy was essential.

Chu described the intricate process of managing the colors, particularly in visual effects. “Green is so sensitive,” he noted. “Every time you switch to different formats like HDR or IMAX, those greens go everywhere. It’s her skin,” he said, speaking of Elphaba‘s character.

In addition to color, the film also features newly recorded performances and original songs that expand upon the characters Elphaba and Glinda‘s narratives. Chu praised lead actress Cynthia Erivo, stating she is “a badass,” and expressed excitement over the film’s emotional depth.

During his conversation, Chu reflected on how he wanted to portray the characters’ journeys, exploring their loneliness and choices. He indicated that Elphaba’s struggle with her identity and Glinda’s evolution reflect larger themes about privilege and personal growth.

Chu also teased exciting new elements in the plot, including a dynamic courtship between Elphaba and Fiyero, which he hopes will resonate deeply with audiences. “This is not about them getting together; it’s about figuring out who they are,” he stressed.

The anticipation for ‘Wicked: For Good’ is already palpable, with the first film’s successful run and ten Oscar nominations adding to the excitement. As the release date draws near, fans are eager to see how the film brings fresh perspectives while paying homage to the original material.
