Columbus Schools Close Amid Heavy Snowfall and Frigid Temperatures
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Schools across Columbus were closed Tuesday as heavy snowfall and frigid temperatures swept through the region. The decision came after snow blanketed downtown Columbus on Monday, January 6, 2025, with more snow expected later in the week.
According to local meteorologists, temperatures on Tuesday morning hovered in the low to mid-20s, with wind chills dropping into the teens and single digits. A quieter morning gave way to increasing clouds, with scattered flurries reported in some areas. Overnight lows are expected to dip into the teens, with a disturbance bringing additional snow showers on Wednesday.
“Some areas could see less than an inch of snow, but the real concern is the cold,” said Sarah Converse, a meteorologist with WSYX. “Temperatures will plummet into the single digits, making it dangerous for students and staff to travel.”
The Columbus City School District announced the closure early Tuesday morning, citing hazardous road conditions and the potential for further snowfall. “The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” said Superintendent Dr. Angela Johnson. “We will continue to monitor the weather and provide updates as needed.”
Residents are bracing for another round of snow expected to arrive by Friday evening. While confidence remains low regarding the duration of the snowfall, meteorologists predict temperatures will remain below freezing through the weekend. Highs are expected to reach the low 30s by Monday, offering some relief from the prolonged cold spell.
Local authorities are urging residents to stay off the roads if possible and to check on vulnerable neighbors. The city has deployed additional snowplows and salt trucks to keep major roadways clear. “We’re doing everything we can to ensure safe travel conditions,” said Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman. “But we need everyone to do their part by staying home and avoiding unnecessary trips.”
As the winter storm continues, residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and school closure announcements. The Columbus City School District has set up a hotline for parents and staff to receive the latest information.
