Community Mourns Professor Killed in Air Crash, Scholarships Announced

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Family and friends gathered on Saturday at Hope Community Church in Andover to celebrate the life of Lindsey (Carter) Fields, a professor at Butler Community College who tragically lost her life in an aviation accident.
Fields was one of the 67 people killed when American Airlines Flight 5342 collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter on January 29, 2025. She was traveling to Washington, D.C., to advocate for excellence in life science on behalf of the National Association of Biology Teachers.
According to her obituary, Fields was not only a dedicated educator but also a beloved wife, mother, and daughter, known for her infectious smile and her boundless love for her students and community. Her passing has left a significant void in the lives of many.
“Lindsey inspired us all to chase our dreams,” the obituary stated. “We are committed to honoring her memory by empowering future scientists.” To this end, the Lindsey (Carter) Fields Memorial Science Scholarship has been established. Contributions to the scholarship can be made through designated channels, emphasizing Fields’ enduring impact on education.
Additional tributes and remembrances were shared during the service, highlighting Fields’ commitment to her students and her role in the community. Colleagues and former students offered testimonials about how she influenced their lives and careers.
The community continues to grieve the loss of Fields along with the other victims of the tragic incident, with memorials and support initiatives being organized in her honor.
