Community in Shock After Mass Shooting Leaves 25 Injured and 1 Dead in Akron

Akron, Ohio woke up to a harrowing scene today as the aftermath of a mass shooting that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning near Kelly and 8th Avenues unraveled. In a tragic turn of events, a total of 25 individuals were left injured by gunfire, with one individual, a 27-year-old man whose identity is yet to be disclosed, losing his life in the violent incident.

First responders from Akron swiftly reacted to the distressing situation shortly after midnight when multiple calls reporting shots fired and numerous victims poured in. As police rushed to the scene, the emergency rooms of local hospitals saw an influx of gunshot wound victims seeking urgent medical attention.

Summa Health shared that out of the 15 patients they received, 13 sustained non-life-threatening injuries, with one individual listed in critical condition. Cleveland Clinic Akron General also admitted seven patients, one of whom was in critical condition; the hospital’s Emergency Department remained on a hard lockdown until the early hours of the morning.

Residents in the vicinity described the night’s events as unfolding at a large birthday party disrupted by violence, recounting the sudden shift from celebration to chaos as gunshots echoed through the air. Witnesses like Jehovah Jones and Joyoux Payne painted a picture of sheer panic and fear gripping the once festive atmosphere.

The recovery efforts at the scene yielded evidence crucial to the investigation, including the recovery of one firearm and numerous bullet casings as Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding acknowledged the tragedy and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

In response to the incident, Mayor Malik announced plans for a press conference later in the day to provide further updates on the situation. As the community grapples with the shock of the violence that unfolded, authorities urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
