Controversial Biopic 'swatantrya Veer Savarkar' Stirs Debate Ahead Of Elections

Amidst the election season in India, the release of the polarising biopic ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ has sparked intense debate and discussion. Portrayed by actor Randeep Hooda, the film delves into the life and ideologies of the controversial figure Hindutva ideologue Veer Savarkar, known for his complex legacy.

Directed by Hooda himself, the 178-minute film takes a sharp angle in presenting Savarkar’s role in the nationalist movement, often depicting him as a hero sidelined by the Congress party. It highlights his early rationalist views, contributions to the Free India Society, and influence on revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose.

However, the biopic has drawn criticism for its selective portrayal of Savarkar, omitting controversial aspects such as his communal stances and political alignments. The film skims over his contentious relationship with Mahatma Gandhi, instead glorifying Savarkar’s role in inspiring armed rebellion against the British.

Scenes depicting Savarkar’s imprisonment and torture in the Cellular Jail juxtaposed with the scenic beauty of Port Blair evoke a sense of sacrifice and struggle. The film also explores his disappointment and envy towards Gandhi and Nehru, hinting at the complex dynamics within the nationalist movement.

‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’ serves as a cinematic exploration of a divisive historical figure, inviting viewers to reflect on the differing perspectives on India’s path to independence. The film’s release during the election season adds a contemporary layer to the ongoing debates surrounding nationalism and identity in India.
