Controversy Surrounds DR Congo-Tanzania Match Amid Alleged Assault on Journalist
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) is set to face Tanzania in a crucial match for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Thursday at 18:00. However, the match is overshadowed by a significant controversy involving an alleged assault on a journalist by a member of the DR Congo national team’s security detail. According to Sport News Africa, the journalist Gede Luiz Kupa was reportedly assaulted with a firearm.
As reported by witnesses, the incident occurred during the 15 minutes of training open to the media. The journalist, visibly shaken, expressed his distress, stating, “I am so shocked by this scene and I hope the Confederation of African Football (CAF) will find a solution.” Kupa plans to file a complaint, with support from fellow journalists who are considering a boycott of the post-match media activities unless a public apology is issued.
Meanwhile, DR Congo’s coach, Sébastien Désarbre, remains focused on the game. On October 9, he expressed confidence in his team’s chances against Tanzania, stating they are well-positioned in Group H of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. “The goal is to qualify after six matches. We need 10 to 11 points, and we currently have six,” Désarbre said, highlighting the team’s preparatory strategy. He encouraged local supporters to attend the match at the Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa to bolster the team’s morale.
Simultaneously, Tanzania’s coach, Hemed Morocco, acknowledged the capabilities of the DR Congo team but assured that his players were prepared to deliver a strong performance. “We know DR Congo is performing well at the African level. They have very good players but also difficulties that they themselves know. We are focused on achieving a good result,” Morocco stated.
The last encounter between DR Congo and Tanzania ended in a draw during the Africa Cup of Nations held in Côte d’Ivoire. Both teams are aiming to secure a win in this highly anticipated qualifier.
