Cool And Gloomy Weather Hits Calgary Amid Hail Storm Damages

Calgary is experiencing a cool and gloomy day as a low-pressure system hovers over Alberta. Residents can expect on-and-off showers throughout the day and potentially an embedded thunderstorm.

This unstable weather has also brought a cooler air mass along with it, resulting in temperatures that are only in the teens for the next couple of days. Additionally, there’s a chance that some smoke from the north could affect air quality, pushing the Air Quality Health Index to a moderate level of four.

Good news is expected later in the evening, as the skies are likely to clear after 8 p.m. on Wednesday. This means more sunshine for the remainder of the week, allowing temperatures to climb back to normal for Friday and the weekend.

Unfortunately, the recent hailstorms have caused significant damage to homes, vehicles, crops, and equipment in the area. Reports indicate that baseball-sized hail fell south of Queenstown, while tennis ball-sized hail was reported near Mossleigh. Residents in Cochrane and the north end of Calgary experienced hen egg-sized hail.

Amidst the weather news, the community mourns the loss of 22-year-old Mackenzie Trottier, whose body was found recently at a Saskatoon landfill after she had been missing since December 2020. The Toronto police are also under scrutiny following an incident where a video surfaced of an officer behaving inappropriately during a parking dispute.

Sports also made headlines, with Toronto swimmer Summer McIntosh returning home after an impressive performance at the 2024 Olympic Games. She admits that the reality of her achievements has yet to sink in fully.

Meanwhile, political discussions are heating up regarding U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris and her recent running mate selection, with former Canadian ambassador Bruce Heyman weighing in on potential impacts to U.S.-Canada relations.

The British government has called on Elon Musk to handle his social media criticisms responsibly, especially in light of the current unrest in the U.K. sparked by his posts.
