BC Couple Found Dead in Boat on Nova Scotia’s Sable Island After Reported Missing on Voyage to Azores
Police have launched an investigation after the tragic discovery of human remains in a boat that washed ashore on Nova Scotia‘s remote Sable Island. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were alerted by Parks Canada when a small inflatable boat, approximately three meters in size, arrived on the island carrying the bodies of two individuals.
The deceased, believed to be a 60-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man from British Columbia, were identified as the missing sailors who set out on an ill-fated journey towards the Azores, an archipelago in Portugal. The inflatable boat is suspected to be a lifeboat from a larger vessel known as Theros.
Reports indicate that the couple went missing after departing from Halifax Harbour on June 11, with concerns raised on June 18 when they failed to reach their destination. Their bodies were found over a month later on Sable Island, prompting a collaborative effort involving the RCMP, Parks Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service.
