The popular Netflix series “Outer Banks” has fans buzzing with their own interpretations of the show’s storylines. In particular, viewers have been intrigued by the possibility of a romantic development between the characters Rafe Cameron and Kiara Carrera following their unexpected alliance in season 3. This theory, however, has encountered resistance from the actors themselves.

During a recent interview with PEOPLE, Drew Starkey, who portrays Rafe, expressed his and co-star Madison Bailey‘s surprise at fans “shipping” their characters. “Madison and I were like, ‘Wait, what? No, that doesn’t make much sense,'” said Starkey. He further explained, “I think it’d be especially unfair to Kiara, you know? I think she deserves a little better than that.”

Meanwhile, Chase Stokes, who plays John B., Kiara’s lifelong friend and Sarah Cameron‘s love interest, shared a similar sentiment. He remarked, “It actually makes no sense in my brain,” regarding the fan proposition.

In season 3, Rafe and Kiara encountered each other under extraordinary circumstances, as both were kidnapped by a fellow gold hunter. This newfound dynamic led some viewers to perceive potential romantic tension. However, the storyline seemed to stray from that path, as Starkey discusses his character finding solace elsewhere.

Starkey notes that his character Rafe “found someone of his own,” referring to Sofia, played by Fiona Palomo. “This season, he was in a place of drowning in pessimism about the world. He’s lost the only person he’s really, really cared about,” Starkey commented on Rafe’s emotional journey after the death of his father, Ward Cameron.

“And now, all of a sudden this person comes out, and he can find comfort in another human being and be himself. So yeah, I’m happy for him,” Starkey elaborated on this new direction for his character.

As “Outer Banks” gears up for season 4, the cast returns with new adventures. The storyline is set to continue with the Pogues attempting to build Poguelandia 2.0 in the Outer Banks and being drawn back into the treasure hunt game. Wes Genrette enlists their help in locating Blackbeard’s lost treasure, suggesting more excitement and danger ahead.

Rafe, on the other hand, is poised to explore a new venture with real estate shark Hollis Robinson in a potentially lucrative project, indicating another layer of complexity to the upcoming season’s narrative.

“Outer Banks” season 4 is eagerly anticipated, with its first part premiering on October 10 on Netflix, followed by the release of part two on November 7.
