Criticism is swelling on social media over the TBS broadcast of Game 4 in the American League Division Series between the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals. During the game, which concluded in the Yankees’ favor with a 3-2 victory, a controversial camera decision during a pivotal play drew ire from fans and commentators alike.

In the fourth inning, Giancarlo Stanton hit a double which allowed Juan Soto to score the game’s first run. However, as Soto slid into home plate, the TBS broadcast opted to focus the camera on Stanton rather than the action at the plate. The decision left viewers confused about the outcome of the play until it was confirmed that Soto had indeed scored.

Reactions on social media platforms were swift and vociferous. One post read, “Yankees took the lead and we had no idea because TBS doesn’t know how to broadcast a baseball game,” accompanied by an image purportedly showing the media crew’s reactions.

Steve Torre of Mad Dog Radio voiced his dissatisfaction, stating, “TBS is an embarrassment. Atrocious camera work on Stanton double. Had no clue if Soto scored or how close the play was going to be. Too busy getting a George Brett history lesson.” Criticism also extended to the overall broadcast, with some speculating on whether the missteps were intentional.

The Yankees continue their quest to secure a spot in the American League Championship Series with their next game set for Thursday in Kansas City, also televised by TBS.

Bob Costas, a longtime broadcasting veteran handling play-by-play duties for TBS, has faced negative reviews for his commentary throughout the series. Despite hopes from some fans for a change in coverage, the current situation suggests Costas may continue in this role if the Yankees win the next game and advance.
