Dallas Cowboys Player Marshawn Kneeland Found Dead After Mental Health Crisis
FRISCO, Texas — Marshawn Kneeland, a 24-year-old defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys, was found dead early Thursday morning from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The tragic event unfolded following a series of concerning communications with his loved ones and a police chase.
According to police dispatch audio obtained by CBS News Texas, Kneeland sent a goodbye text message to a group of friends shortly before his death. His girlfriend expressed alarm to authorities, stating he was armed and had a history of mental health issues. A dispatcher reported she quoted Kneeland saying he would ‘end it all.’
The situation escalated late Wednesday night. Around 10:39 PM, Troopers attempted to pull Kneeland over for a traffic violation. Instead of stopping, he fled, leading officers on a pursuit that culminated when they lost sight of his car. Minutes later, they located his vehicle crashed on the Dallas Parkway, but Kneeland was missing.
Officers received a call shortly after 11 PM from Kneeland’s girlfriend, who reported his concerning messages. She stated the player was in distress and had sent a group text saying goodbye, prompting urgent concerns for his safety.
After an extensive search, Kneeland’s body was found at approximately 1:30 AM inside a portable toilet near the area where his car had crashed. His agent, Jonathan Perzley, confirmed the news, expressing devastation over the loss of his client and friend.
“Marshawn was a beloved teammate and member of our organization,” the Cowboys said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers regarding Marshawn are with his girlfriend Catalina and his family.”
The Collin County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death. This incident has raised concerns about mental health and the support available for athletes.
