Danny Boyle’s ’28 Years Later’ Revives the Zombie Apocalypse with Star-Studded Cast and New Trilogy
Danny Boyle is set to revive the zombie apocalypse genre with the highly anticipated film ’28 Years Later’, the third installment in the ‘28 Days Later‘ series. This post-apocalyptic horror film, co-written by Boyle and Alex Garland, marks the return of the creative duo to the franchise after their roles as executive producers in the second film, ‘28 Weeks Later‘.
The film takes place 28 years after the events of ’28 Weeks Later’ and follows a young boy navigating a desolate northern England in search of a doctor to help his ailing mother. The narrative is set against a backdrop of a world still grappling with the Rage Virus, with infected individuals posing a constant threat. The cast includes Cillian Murphy reprising his role as Jim, alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding.
Principal photography for ’28 Years Later’ began on May 7, 2024, in Northumberland and wrapped on July 29. Notably, the film was shot using an iPhone 15 Pro Max, aided by various expensive attachments. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States and Canada by Sony Pictures Releasing on June 20, 2025.
In addition to ’28 Years Later’, a sequel titled ’28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple‘ is already in production, directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Boyle and Garland. This second film in the new trilogy is being shot back-to-back with ’28 Years Later’ and continues the story with Cillian Murphy reprising his role. The poster for ’28 Years Later’ has also hinted at the upcoming sequel, featuring imagery that suggests the title ‘The Bone Temple’.
A recent teaser trailer released by Sony Pictures Entertainment has generated significant excitement, showcasing a remote island setting and including Morse code that suggests a full trailer could be released soon. The teaser’s cryptic nature has fueled speculation among fans about the plot and the release date of the full trailer.
