David Kaczynski Reveals Emotional Letters to His Unabomber Brother

LINCOLN, Montana – David Kaczynski, brother of the notorious Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, has shared heart-wrenching details of letters he penned over decades, seeking forgiveness and connection with his brother while he was imprisoned.
David, now 75, began writing to Ted shortly after he turned him into the FBI in 1996, unmasking the Harvard-educated domestic terrorist behind a series of bombings that killed three people and injured nearly two dozen.
“I could only imagine how much Ted resented me,” David reflected, expressing his wish to speak with Ted face-to-face. He explained that he and his wife felt a moral duty to prevent further violence by notifying authorities.
However, Ted rejected David’s attempts at reconciliation. In a vehement response, he accused David of betraying him out of jealousy. “You will go to hell, because for you, seeing yourself as you really are will truly be hell,” Ted wrote. “The real reason why you informed on me is that you hate me.”
Despite Ted’s harsh words, David persisted in his correspondence, stating, “I wanted us to look into each other’s eyes and share the truth.” His mother had advised him never to abandon Ted, fearing that this was his brother’s worst nightmare.
Historically, the two had a close bond. David helped Ted navigate social interactions and was one of the few people Ted seemed to care about. Their communication dwindled in the years leading up to Ted’s capture, primarily after Ted turned into a recluse, largely cutting ties with his family.
The first bombing attributed to Ted occurred in 1978, escalating into a national manhunt that lasted nearly two decades before Ted was arrested in 1996.
In monumental moments over the years, David continued to convey love to his brother, even during Ted’s confinement in the maximum-security Federal Correctional Complex in Colorado. David reached out to Ted after their mother suffered health issues, urging him to reconnect, but Ted never responded.
Following Ted’s transfer to a medical facility in Butner, North Carolina, David learned from lawyers that he had been diagnosed with late-stage cancer. “I didn’t know how to express my feelings, but I wanted him to know he had a positive impact on my life,” David said.
David attempted to stay in contact but faced setbacks when a Christmas message was returned as undeliverable. Searching online, he discovered Ted was no longer in Colorado and had been moved due to serious health issues.
Unfortunately, Ted Kaczynski passed away in 2023. David, still yearning for closure, expressed a desire to gain custody of Ted’s remains but faced complications due to prison handling protocols. He has no knowledge of what became of his brother’s body.
