Dayton Nato Assembly Preparations

DAYTON, Ohio — The City of Dayton is gearing up for a historical weekend as it prepares to host the NATO spring assembly.

According to reports from News Center 7, a large area of Downtown Dayton has been restricted in anticipation of the arrival of hundreds of delegates from 32 countries for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Signs of the assembly are visible throughout the city, with national flags hanging on light poles. Police presence is heightened, with officers stationed on nearly every corner to ensure safety. “I feel proud,” said local resident Michael Bissallion. “I’m glad they’re here.”

Dayton Police estimate that 14,000 feet of fencing and 6,000 feet of concrete barriers have been set up to secure the area. Many streets, including South Main Street, will experience detours and other restrictions until Tuesday, May 27.

The significance of the event is not lost on attendees. Bissallion, who has lived in Dayton for over 40 years, expressed pride for the city’s role in hosting the assembly, noting the involvement of State Representative Mike Turner in bringing the event to the city. This gathering marks the first time in over 20 years that NATO has convened in the United States.

“It’s a good thing that they are here,” Bissallion said, although he voiced concerns over the extensive security measures. “You know, to anybody that’s a part of NATO is an important person in this world, not just this country. They need to feel safe,” he noted, while also emphasizing the need for courtesy towards local residents during such events.

News Center 7 will continue to follow developments surrounding the NATO assembly as the weekend progresses.
