Deadly Storm Ravages Tallahassee, Leaving One Dead and Thousands Without Power
A deadly storm swept through Tallahassee, Florida, early Friday morning, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The storm, which brought winds of up to 100 mph, resulted in one fatality and left thousands of residents without power.
The National Weather Service issued multiple tornado warnings for the Tallahassee area as the severe weather system moved through the region. The City of Tallahassee reported extensive damage to the electric grid, with severe impacts to transmission lines affecting 11 substations.
As the storm tore through the city, it caused significant damage to various areas, including the beloved arts district of Railroad Square and the campuses of Florida State University and Tallahassee Community College. Leon County Schools were also forced to close as the community rallied to assess the aftermath of the storm.
Residents in Tallahassee were left reeling as the ferocious storm ripped through their neighborhoods, toppling trees, downing power lines, and damaging homes and buildings. The City of Tallahassee mobilized crews to begin the monumental task of clearing roads and restoring power to the more than 66,000 customers left in the dark.
Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for Tallahassee and 12 North Florida counties in response to the storm’s impact. The National Weather Service is working to determine the exact number of tornadoes that touched down in the area as storm survey teams assess the damage.
