Dekalb County Water Main Break Clairmont Road

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A major water main break on Clairmont Road has prompted the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management to issue a boil water advisory for parts of the county, including Emory University‘s Atlanta campus. The advisory, issued early Wednesday, affects areas bounded by Moreland Avenue, Candler Street/Clairemont Avenue, Mason Mill, and Hosea Williams.

Repair crews are working to fix the break, which caused a hole to form in Clairmont Road. The incident has led to a significant drop in water pressure, and officials anticipate a complete water outage lasting several hours. Residents and businesses in the affected areas are advised to boil water before use or rely on bottled water until further notice.

Jan Bolgla, owner of Atlanta Vintage Books, expressed concern about the impact on local businesses. “Yes, I’m concerned, and I’m surprised that there’s a little hole in the street,” Bolgla said. “I don’t know if anybody can get down Clairmont to get to our store, but we’re open. You just have to go down Manville. So, it probably will not be our best day.”

DeKalb County is distributing free bottled water at several locations, including Fire Station 1 on Clifton Road, Fire Station 3 on Clarendon Avenue, Fire Station 7 on Columbia Drive, Fire Station 9 on Druid Hills Road, Fire Station 20 on Warren Road, and RaceTrac on Clairmont Road.

Emory University is also taking steps to mitigate the impact of the outage. The university plans to provide drinking water for students and staff on campus and will share updates on distribution details as they become available.

The boil water advisory will remain in effect until water quality testing confirms it is safe to lift. Residents are urged to follow guidelines for boiling water or using bottled water for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth.
