US Deploys B-2 Stealth Bombers against Houthi Targets in Yemen
The United States has launched a series of airstrikes targeting underground weapons storage facilities in Yemen, marking the first confirmed use of B-2 Spirit stealth bombers against Houthi targets in the region. The strikes, which took place on Wednesday evening, were directed at sites believed to be controlled by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
The US Department of Defense confirmed the operation aimed at five underground storage sites that harbored advanced conventional weapons. These facilities, according to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, were used by the Houthis as a base for attacks on civilian and military vessels operating in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
In a statement, Secretary Austin said, “This was a unique demonstration of the United States’ ability to target facilities that our adversaries seek to keep out of reach, no matter how deeply buried or fortified.” The strikes were authorized by President Joe Biden amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
The use of B-2 bombers highlights the US military’s focus on targeting deeply fortified Houthi installations. These bombers are renowned for their stealth capabilities and significant payloads, making them ideally suited for such missions.
The timing of these strikes coincides with a period of heightened instability in the Middle East. US allies, particularly Israel, have been under continuous threat from Iranian proxies, including the Houthis, who have frequently attacked commercial shipping and military vessels in crucial maritime corridors.
In recent months, the Houthis have claimed responsibility for launching ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as drone attacks, against international vessels, including those operated by the US Navy. As tensions escalate, these strikes signify an intensified US campaign to counteract Houthi aggression and safeguard international shipping routes.
The conflict has also expanded with the Houthis aligning themselves with other Iranian-backed groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah in their campaigns against Israel. This alignment has drawn further military responses from Israel, with airstrikes targeting Houthi positions in Yemen after attempts on Israeli territory.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that Wednesday’s operation did not result in any civilian casualties. Over the past year, the US has bolstered its military presence in the region, deploying advanced naval and air units to deter Houthi threats. This includes carrier strike groups, amphibious ready groups, and guided missile destroyers accompanying additional aircraft support.
