Deputy Dies After Crash During Pursuit in Victorville

VICTORVILLE, Calif. — A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy tragically lost his life in a crash on March 17, 2025, while pursuing an auto theft suspect. The incident unfolded around 11:09 a.m. at the intersection of Seneca Road and El Evado Road, leaving the community in mourning.
According to law enforcement sources, the chase began after deputies received a report of a possible stolen vehicle. The patrol vehicle, which was severely damaged in the collision, was found split in two. The deputy’s body was recovered shortly after 1 p.m. by the coroner.
The scene was particularly emotional, with fellow deputies embracing each other as they processed the tragedy. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with several news helicopters capturing footage of the wreckage.
Gloria Orejel, Public Information Officer for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, confirmed there were live wires down on the site, which initially hindered emergency response efforts. ‘We are still gathering information,’ Orejel stated. ‘At this time, we cannot confirm the extent of injuries or details about the circumstances surrounding the crash.’
A black sedan was discovered at the scene bearing evident damage, and one occupant, a woman in her 20s, was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Her father reported that she was alert but required further testing.
Vehicles from various law enforcement agencies participated in a solemn procession to the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office, honoring the fallen deputy. Firefighters stood watch, saluting as the procession passed, signifying the respect and gratitude offered to those who serve.
The San Bernardino Police Officers Association expressed their condolences on social media, writing, ‘We are deeply saddened by the passing of a San Bernardino County deputy. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family, friends, and the entire agency at this difficult time.’
