Descendants: The Rise of Red” has emerged as the most-watched live-action original movie on Disney+ since the release of “Hocus Pocus 2” in September 2022, according to information exclusively shared with TheWrap. The film, part of Disney’s “Descendants” franchise, began streaming on July 12 and has accumulated more than 33 million viewers in its first 12 weeks.

The movie’s initial release was met with significant interest, drawing 6.7 million views within the first three days of its streaming debut. This performance was noted as impressive compared to previous records for Disney+ original films. “The Rise of Red” is a continuation of the popular “Descendants” series, featuring an adventure that follows the daughters of the Queen of Hearts and Cinderella as they unite to save the realm of Auradon.

According to data provided, the movie ranked fifth on Nielsen’s charts for most-watched films in the week of July 8-14, achieving 386 million viewing minutes. It maintained this position into its second week with increased viewing minutes of 424 million, before settling into sixth place during the third week, with 260 million minutes watched.

This viewing success has placed “The Rise of Red” in comparison with other high-profile releases on Disney+, including Pixar‘s “Inside Out 2” and Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” concert movie. The latter, another high-performing Disney+ feature, attracted 4.6 million viewers in its opening weekend.

The film’s popularity extends beyond Disney+. Its soundtrack has been streamed more than 25 million times, and its related hashtag on TikTok has gathered over 90 million views in just seven days. These metrics reflect an ongoing interest that may prompt further installments in the “Descendants” franchise, although nothing has been officially confirmed yet.

Directed by Jennifer Phang with a screenplay by Dan Frey and Ru Sommer, “The Rise of Red” stars Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker, among others. The creative success of this latest installment suggests potential for future projects, possibly involving other Disney villains not fully explored in previous films.
