Dig Abiodun Alabi Speaking At A Public Lecture

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. Abiodun Alabi, has issued a stern warning to journalists against promoting the activities of insurgents, emphasizing the need for responsible and balanced reporting to maintain national peace and security.

Alabi, who is the Coordinating DIG in charge of the South West Geo-political Zone, made these remarks during a public lecture titled “The role of media in promoting national peace and security” at the 2024 annual press week of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ekiti Council, held in Ado Ekiti on Saturday.

He cautioned journalists to avoid sensationalism and the use of derogative or emotive language that could trigger security lapses. Alabi stressed that accurate, balanced, and unbiased reporting is crucial to prevent tensions and security breaches.

“Stop giving oxygen to insurgents, stop giving them unnecessary promotions. In doing this, you will continue to assist them in achieving their aims of truncating the peace of the nation,” Alabi warned. He also highlighted the importance of proactive protection of Nigerian cyberspace and electronic infrastructure from hacking and criminal interference.

The DIG further advocated for the establishment of programs to prevent terrorists from financing their operations and suggested technical tasks assistance to build the capacity of allies in this regard.

Ekiti NUJ Chairman, Kayode Babatuyi, commended the DIG for the lecture and assured that journalists would continue to prioritize national peace and security in their reporting.
