Diogo Jota Partners with FC Porto for eSports Venture
Diogo Jota, the Liverpool forward, has entered a new collaboration with his former club, FC Porto, but this time in the realm of eSports. Jota’s gaming venture, Luna eSports, has formed a partnership with Porto, a club he was once loaned to in the 2016/17 season. This strategic move brings together the worlds of traditional football and digital competition.
FC Porto, which has been involved in the eSports scene since 2020, announced this latest endeavor as a continuation of its efforts to solidify its presence in this rapidly growing industry. “FC Porto already has a rich and successful history in eSports and we believe that this partnership will allow us to grow even more,” read a statement from the club as reported by the Portuguese outlet, Record.pt. The club sees this partnership as a way to expand its brand reach, particularly among younger, tech-savvy demographics.
Luna eSports, originally formed as a merger between Diogo Jota eSports and Galaxy Racer, will engage with FC Porto across several popular gaming platforms, including EAFC, DOTA 2, and Rocket League. Jota expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “It’s a pride to join Luna Galaxy to a club with the history of FC Porto, which I had the honour of representing as an athlete.” He emphasized that both entities share a drive for success, a characteristic that will underpin their joint efforts in eSports.
The collaboration aligns well with the global eSports market’s projected growth, which industry reports suggest will reach $1.87 billion by 2025. It reflects how traditional sports entities, like FC Porto, are looking to diversify their offerings and engage with fans in new ways. Porto’s previous successes in eSports include several national virtual football titles, further establishing it as a significant player in the digital arena.
This venture is illustrative of a broader trend where professional athletes are leveraging their passions and fan bases to explore opportunities beyond the field. For Diogo Jota, it signifies a continuation of his dual interests in soccer and gaming, as he prepares for a future that could potentially bridge both worlds.
