Disney and Pixar Announce ‘Coco 2’ Set for 2029 Release

BURBANK, Calif. — Disney and Pixar have officially announced ‘Coco 2,’ slated for release in 2029, during the company’s annual shareholder meeting on March 20, 2025. The sequel returns to the enchanting Land of the Dead and continues the story of Miguel, who aspires to be a musician despite family restrictions.

Disney CEO Bob Iger shared the news with shareholders, stating, “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure. And we can’t wait to share more soon.”

Oscar-winning director Lee Unkrich, known for his work on ‘Coco’ and ‘Toy Story 3,’ will direct the sequel alongside co-director Adrian Molina, who also worked on the original film. Veteran producer Mark Nielsen, recognized for films such as ‘Toy Story 4’ and ‘Inside Out 2,’ will oversee production.

The original ‘Coco,’ released in 2017, garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, earning two Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for ‘Remember Me.’ The film grossed over $800 million worldwide, with $210.4 million at the domestic box office. The character Miguel, a 12-year-old boy, embarks on a journey within the Land of the Dead to understand his family’s rich history and cultural heritage.

“Coco” was celebrated for its vibrant animation, musical score, and authentic representation of Mexican traditions, especially the Día de los Muertos. The planned sequel is anticipated to delve into new chapters of Miguel’s life, reflecting themes of family and music that resonated with audiences in the first film.

While specific plot details have yet to be disclosed, fans predict the sequel will follow an older Miguel as he faces fresh challenges while honoring the beloved themes of the original story.
