LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles Dodgers have strengthened their bullpen by acquiring right-hander Diaz from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor-leaguer Villani. To accommodate Diaz on the 40-man roster, another player was placed on the 60-day injured list.

Diaz, 28, was once an All-Star closer for the Reds and has a strong early-career record with a 2.47 ERA and an 18.4% strikeout-to-walk ratio. However, his performance has notably declined since his All-Star season in 2023. He ended the 2024 season with a 3.99 ERA and acknowledged some issues with his velocity and control.

Despite his struggles, Diaz still holds an impressive career batting average against of .181 and a whiff rate of 28.8%. His slider, once a dominant pitch with a positive run value, now appears to have lost some of its effectiveness, prompting the Dodgers to pursue him as a buy-low opportunity.

The Dodgers are optimistic that Diaz can rediscover his form in a less pressurized role, creating a low-risk chance to bolster their bullpen. With injuries affecting their current roster, this acquisition reflects the Dodgers’ strategy in managing their pitching staff during a competitive season.

As the team prepares for upcoming games, including a matchup against the Yankees, the expectation is for Diaz to contribute meaningfully once he adjusts to his new environment.
