PHILADELPHIA — The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Saturday night, marking a strong start to their playoff run.

A standout moment came during the seventh inning when Teoscar Hernández hit a three-run home run, lifting the Dodgers to a commanding lead. This victory was particularly significant as it coincided with the return of Dodgers legend Clayton Kershaw, who is finishing his career in a bullpen role.

Kershaw, 37, was not included in the earlier Wild Card Series against the Cincinnati Reds but was added to the Dodgers’ 26-man roster for the NLDS after his absence. He had previously been out due to a late-season injury and is expected to contribute as a reliever in the playoffs.

“It’s a unique situation for me,” Kershaw said. “I just want to help the team win, whatever way I can.”

The Dodgers made several roster changes leading into the series, replacing lefty Justin Wrobleski and righty Edgardo Henriquez with Kershaw and Anthony Banda. Kershaw’s performance in relief could be pivotal as the team faces off against a formidable Phillies lineup.

In his career, Kershaw has spent all 18 seasons with the Dodgers, earning numerous accolades, including two World Series championships. Despite not being part of the initial playoff roster, his return is seen as a boost for Los Angeles.

Starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani also faced challenges, striking out four times at the plate; however, he helped secure the win with a solid performance on the mound, recording nine strikeouts over six innings.

Alex Vesia came through with a crucial out to preserve the lead in the eighth before Roki Sasaki earned his first career save in the ninth, solidifying the Dodgers’ win.

The series will continue with Game 2 scheduled for Monday night in Philadelphia.
