Don Mattingly Eyes First World Series as Blue Jays Push Forward

TORONTO, Canada — Don Mattingly, the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays, is hoping for his first World Series appearance after a long career in baseball. Mattingly, who played for the New York Yankees from 1982 to 1995, never reached the World Series as a player or coach in previous positions.
Speaking before Game 3 of the American League Division Series (ALDS), Mattingly expressed optimism about the Blue Jays’ chances. “Every year you go to spring training, you think about getting there, right? That’s why you keep doing it,” he said.
Despite a successful playing career marked by a .307 batting average, Mattingly’s postseason experience has been limited. In 1995, he batted .417 during the ALDS, but the Yankees lost to the Seattle Mariners, ending their playoff run.
During his coaching career, he served under notable managers like Joe Torre with the Yankees and was the Dodgers’ manager before joining the Blue Jays. None of these tenures led to a World Series ring.
The Blue Jays entered Game 3 of the ALDS with a strong record. Mattingly acknowledged the team’s potential, stating, “It’s been a fun team up to this point. This is a good group that plays solid baseball.” His words reflect a deep appreciation for the players’ teamwork and skill.
Buck Showalter, Mattingly’s former teammate, praised his abilities, saying, “I’ve seen some bad baseball people who were part of some championship teams. Donnie is just the opposite.” Showalter emphasized that Mattingly’s attribute of sincerity has always drawn respect from players and fans alike.
Mattingly’s career was significantly hampered by injuries, particularly to his back, which contributed to his retirement after the 1995 season. “If this guy hadn’t had the back issues, he’s a first-ballot Hall of Famer,” said Showalter.
The Yankees are known for their rich playoff history, having won 27 World Series titles. As Mattingly reflects on his career, the prospect of reaching the World Series with the Blue Jays in 2025 brings renewed hope.
As Game 3 approaches, fans are eager to see if Mattingly’s dreams of a World Series will finally materialize.
