Donald Trump Lauds Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Podcast
During a recent appearance on the Flagrant Podcast, former U.S. President Donald Trump expressed admiration for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, referring to him as a “friend” and applauding his leadership in stabilizing India. Trump characterized Modi as a “killer” in political dealings, despite his outwardly calm demeanor.
Reflecting on the 2019 “Howdy Modi” event between himself and Modi in Houston, Texas, Trump recalled the substantial attendance and the leaders’ shared resolve during crises. The former president recounted his conversations with Modi during times when India faced threats, noting that Modi assured him of his readiness “to do anything necessary” to defend the nation.
Speaking on the podcast, hosted by Andrew Schulz and Akaash Singh, Trump stated, “Modi… India, he’s a friend of mine, he’s great. Before him, they were replacing them every year, very unstable. On the outside, he looks like your father, he’s the nicest guy, but he’s a total killer.” This commentary came amidst Trump’s campaign activities for the upcoming U.S. Presidential election.
Trump also recounted Modi’s firm stance during discussions, saying, “I said, let me help, I am very good with those people,” to which Modi responded, “I will do it, I will do anything necessary, we have defeated them for hundreds of years.” Though Trump refrained from naming the country in question, he hinted, adding, “You can probably guess the country.”
The relationship between Modi and Trump has historically been close, highlighted by the “Howdy Modi” rally in September 2019. This landmark event, attended by over 50,000 Indian-Americans, underscored the strengthening ties between the United States and India. At the event, Modi referred to Trump as a “true friend,” while Trump lauded Modi’s leadership and the contributions of the Indian diaspora.
In February 2020, Trump reciprocated Modi’s Houston visit by traveling to India for the “Namaste Trump” event in Ahmedabad. Held at the world’s largest cricket stadium, the event witnessed over 100,000 attendees, making it Trump’s largest rally outside the United States. Trump used this platform to praise India’s economic advances and leadership under Modi.
